Arturo Fuente founded his cigar company in West Tampa, Florida, in 1912, and the family story since then is one of stubborn rebuilding. A fire destroyed the Tampa factory in 1924, and the family kept rolling cigars at home. Later factories in Nicaragua and Honduras were lost too. In 1980, Carlos Fuente Sr. and his son Carlito opened a factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and that is where the modern Fuente story takes off.
The house is known for range. The Chateau Fuente is creamy and mild, the Hemingway line revived old tapered figurado shapes in the early 1980s, and Don Carlos, named for the patriarch, is built from tobaccos aged as long as ten years. Then there is the Fuente Fuente OpusX, released in 1995 with wrapper grown at the family farm, Chateau de la Fuente, at a time when many believed the Dominican Republic could not grow wrapper leaf at all. The Fuentes also make Ashton cigars at their Dominican factory.
The house style leans cedar, gentle spice, and quiet sweetness, with craftsmanship first. Read more in The Cigar That Refused to Die.
