Ashton was created by Robert Levin, who grew up working in his father's Philadelphia shop, Holt's Cigar Company, and later ran it. Levin developed his own brand in the early 1980s and debuted Ashton in 1985. The name comes from William Ashton Taylor, an English pipe maker.
Shortly after launch, Levin partnered with the Fuente family, and Ashton cigars have been made at the Tabacalera A. Fuente factory in the Dominican Republic ever since. The Levin and Fuente families built the portfolio together, including the original Ashton Classic, Aged Maduro, Cabinet, ESG, and the full-bodied Ashton VSG, which debuted in 1999 with an Ecuadorian Sumatra-seed wrapper grown under natural cloud cover. Today the company is a father-and-son business led by Robert and Sathya Levin, and its family of brands also includes La Aroma de Cuba, made by the García family in Nicaragua.
The house style is refined, well-aged Dominican tobacco with a gentle hand. The Ashton Classic, mild and a little nutty, makes a lovely morning cigar with coffee, and it appears on our list of the best cigars for beginners. The VSG sits at the other end of the scale.
