José Orlando Padrón grew up on his family's tobacco farm in Pinar del Río, Cuba. He left Cuba in 1961 and settled in Miami, where, by the company's own telling, he did carpentry work with a borrowed hammer and saved until he could open Padrón Cigars. The doors opened on September 8, 1964, in a small Little Havana storefront with a single roller.
Padrón turned to Nicaraguan tobacco and opened a factory in Nicaragua in 1970, and Estelí has been home base ever since. Every Padrón is made with sun-grown tobacco. The everyday Padrón Series is aged at least two and a half years. The box-pressed 1964 Anniversary, introduced in 1994 for the company's 30th year, uses tobacco aged about four years, and the 1926 Serie, released in 2002 for José Orlando's 75th birthday, uses tobacco aged five years. Premium lines carry individually numbered bands to guard against counterfeits.
The house style is earthy and rich, with cocoa, coffee, and natural sweetness, offered in natural and maduro wrappers. Above all, Padrón is known for consistency from one box to the next.
