Rocky Patel, born Rakesh Patel, was working as a lawyer when he entered the cigar business in 1995 with the Indian Tabac brand. He went on to build the company under his own name, working closely with growers and factories in Honduras and later opening his own factory, TAVICUSA, in Estelí, Nicaragua.
The line that made his name was the Vintage series, launched in the early 2000s around the idea that long-aged wrapper leaf makes a smoother, more complex cigar. The Vintage 1990 uses a Honduran Broadleaf wrapper aged about 12 years, which softens its strength and leaves it on the milder side of medium. The Vintage 1992 and 1999 followed the same thinking with other wrappers, and later lines such as The Edge brought bolder flavors.
Today Rocky Patel cigars are made in both Honduras and Nicaragua, in a wide range of sizes and strengths, and they are widely available in shops across the United States. The house style is approachable and polished, with a big catalog that lets you start mellow and work toward fuller cigars at your own pace.
