Romeo y Julieta was founded in Havana in 1875 by Inocencio Álvarez and José "Manín" García. In 1903, José "Pepín" Rodríguez Fernández bought the company and turned it into an international name, famously offering personalized cigar bands to important customers. Winston Churchill was among the brand's most loyal smokers, and records from his London tobacconist show repeated orders of Romeo y Julieta cigars.
After the Cuban Revolution, two versions emerged. Habanos S.A. makes the Cuban cigars, while the Romeo y Julieta sold in the United States is made in the Dominican Republic by Altadis U.S.A. This page covers the non-Cuban cigars you will find in American shops.
The best-known U.S. blend is the Romeo y Julieta 1875, named for the founding year. It pairs an Indonesian shade-grown wrapper with Dominican binder and filler for a mild to medium smoke with cedar and roasted nut notes. Other lines, such as Reserva Real and the 1875 Nicaragua, offer different wrappers and more body. The house style is classic and easygoing, and the brand is widely available, which makes it a comfortable place to start.
