How to Season a Humidor: Spanish Cedar, Distilled Water, and Patience

5 min read

Season a new humidor before you trust it. Spanish cedar, distilled water, and a few days of patience so the wood stops stealing RH.

I built my own cabinet humidor in the shop from Spanish cedar. The first week, before I seasoned it properly, the hygrometer dropped like someone had opened a window. The wood was thirsty. It drank the moisture meant for the cigars. Nadia walked past, smelled the cedar, and said the museum could wait until the wood was ready. She was right.

Seasoning is not optional on a new wooden humidor. Skip it and your first boxes will dry out while the cedar equalizes. Here is the calm version I use.

What "seasoning" actually means

Spanish cedar (and similar lining woods) arrives dry relative to the humidity you want inside. If you load cigars immediately, the wood pulls moisture from the air and from the leaf until it settles. Seasoning means raising the humidity of the empty box first, so the wood stops being a sponge.

You are not pickling the humidor. You are letting the lining drink distilled water (or a humidity source) until the empty box holds a steady reading in the range you want.

What you need

I calibrate the hygrometer before I trust it. A wrong meter will "season" you straight into a false sense of security. If your meter has a salt-test or calibration kit, use it. If not, at least compare it to a second meter once.

Method I use: wipe and wait (classic)

1. Lightly dampen a clean sponge or cloth with distilled water. Wring it out. It should be damp, not dripping. 2. Wipe the interior wood, including the lid and any trays. You want the surface evenly moist, not puddles in the corners. Standing water warps wood and invites trouble. 3. Optional: place the damp sponge in a shallow plastic or glass dish (not metal that will rust) inside the humidor so it can continue releasing moisture. Keep it off direct contact with the wood if you can. 4. Close the lid. Leave it alone for 24 hours. 5. Check the hygrometer. You want the empty box climbing toward your target. I aim for the mid-60s percent RH for how I like cigars to smoke. Some people prefer closer to 70. Pick a target and be consistent. 6. Repeat the light wipe if the reading is still low after a day. New cedar can take two to five days. Mine took three the first time because I was impatient and under-wetted the corners.

When the empty humidor holds your target for a full day without a big drop, the wood is close enough. Add your humidification device (beads, packs, or foam system charged per its instructions), wait another day, then load cigars.

Method with humidity packs

Some people season only with high-RH seasoning packs made for new humidors, then switch to their long-term packs (for example, packs labeled for the mid-60s or around 69, depending on preference). Follow the pack maker's steps. The principle is the same: raise the empty box first, then maintain.

I still wipe lightly once on a brand-new cedar lining because I like the wood to start even. Packs alone work for many people. Choose one path and do not mix dripping sponges with saturated packs in a panic.

What not to do

Seal and placement matter

A humidor that will not hold RH after seasoning often has a weak seal, a warped lid, or lives next to a vent or a sunny window. Atlanta summers will fight a cheap seal. I keep my cabinet away from direct sun and HVAC blast. Test the seal by closing a thin strip of paper in the lid: light tug resistance on all sides is a decent home check, not a lab test.

If the box still bleeds humidity after a proper season, fix the seal or the humidification charge before you blame the cigars.

After it's seasoned

Load gradually if you are nervous. I put in a few everyday sticks first, watch the meter for a day, then move the rest. Note the date you seasoned in LongestAsh or a notebook. When you open a new cabinet years later, you will want the reminder.

For smokes while the wood finishes its drink, a travel case or a simple short-term setup keeps you from rushing the process. Mild anchors like a Macanudo Cafe or something from Ashton will wait in a temporary home without drama. When you are ready for the full beginner path, best cigars for beginners and how to smoke a cigar are waiting.

The life truth

You cannot force cedar to be ready on your calendar. Same as a brisket stall. Same as a first light. Measure twice, season once, then enjoy the room you built for the leaf.

Take your time. Log it in LongestAsh when you're ready.
